Star Trek Superbowl Ad Has Trekkies Abuzz

Based on the Star Trek commercial that appeared during the Superbowl, the new Star Trek movie looks incredible. If you are a Trekkie, or just want to be like one, May 8, 2009 is an exciting day! That is the release date for the new Star Trek movie. Although Paramount Pictures is tight lipped about the plot, it is a new vision of the greatest space adventure of all time, "Star Trek". It features a young, new crew venturing boldly where no man has gone before.

Star Trek will explore the early Starfleet careers of future Enterprise officers Kirk (Chris Pine), Spock (Zachary Quinto), Scotty (Simon Pegg), Amanda Grayson (Winona Ryder), Uhura (Zoe Saldana), McCoy (Karl Urban), Sulu (John Cho), and Chekhov (Anton Yelchin). A Romulan, Nero (Eric Bana), and a much older Spock (Leonard Nimoy) are influences, as well as Captain Pike (Bruce Greenwood), the first captain of the USS Enterprise.

The Star Trek movie is being distributed by Paramount Pictures and directed by J.J. Abrams. The production budget is an astounding $150 million. So I'm sure we will see state of art computer aided special effects.

On Superbowl Sunday we got the first glimpse of what the movie is all about. It is an origin story about the original crew of the USS Enterprise coming together. In the commercial we see Kirk in both his rebelious bar-fighting "why are you talking to me man" phase, as well as years later confidently issuing commands from the captain’s chair of the USS Enterprise. Some Trek fans may not recognize the younger pre-Academy Kirk, but that is the point. Pine addressed this head on in a recent interview, saying:

"There’s a scene where my character is in a bar and he’s definitely inebriated and under the influence of his own arrogance. It’s him becoming the Kirk everyone knows. In my book that makes the journey a little more interesting. If he’s a clear-cut leader from the beginning, you don’t have anywhere to go."

Based on the little movie tidbit, many fans seem to be blown away but the true Trekkies will look over the details and see how it all jives with the other Star Trek movies and the TV show.
